How to Fix Lost Saves in How to Fish
Losing progress to a crash is the most common report, and it has a specific cause.
The game does not save when it crashes. Patch 1.0.6 removed that behaviour deliberately. A save is written when you use the Save button, go back to the Main Menu, or Quit — plus an autosave roughly every minute.
Which means: if you are about to do something risky, stop at a clean point and use the button rather than trusting the crash to catch it.
- Corrupted save. Patch 1.0.9 addressed corruption. If loads still fail after updating, the community Discord documents how to remove a bad save file.
- Steam Cloud. Saves sync across machines, which is also what makes a corrupted file follow you — so a Cloud copy is not a backup by itself.
